East to West Sunday, Sep 30 2007

Here I am Lord and I’m drowning, in Your sea of forgetfulness
The chains of yesterday surround me, I yearn for peace and rest
I don’t want to end up where You found me
And it echoes in my mind
Keeps me awake tonight
I know you’ve cast my sin as far as the East is from the West
And I stand before You now as though I’ve never sinned
But today I feel like I’m just one mistake away

From You leaving me this way

I start the day, the war begins

Endless reminding of my sin
And time and time again
Your truth is drowned out by the storm I’m in
Today I feel like I’m just one mistake away

from You leaving me this way

Jesus can you show me just how far the east is from the west
‘Cause I can’t bear to see the man I’ve been
Rising up in me again
In the arms of Your mercy I find rest
‘Cause You know just how far the east is from the west
From one scarred hand to the other

I know You’ve washed me white
Turn my darkness into life
I need Your peace to get me through
To get me through this night
I can’t live by what I feel
About the truth Your word reveals
I’m not holding on to You
But You’re holding on to me

Jesus, You know just how far the East is from the West
I don’t have to see the man I’ve been
Come rising up in me again
In the arms of Your mercy I find rest
You know just how far the East is from the West
From one scarred hand to the other

East to West – Casting Crowns

Every day I go through a seemingly endless cycle of struggling against sin, and more often than not, I fall. But thankfully, I may be beginning to appreciate how comforting it is to have ones sins forgiven!! Very soon, the day will come when I know that my sins will be truly forgiven too.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” Psalms 103:12

“I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.” Isaiah 43:25

“Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18

Prayer for Myanmar Saturday, Sep 29 2007

Tough times lie ahead. Let’s pray to the Lord for mercy to the people in Myanmar.

Heroes 2.. Friday, Sep 28 2007

.. is out!! Episode one poses lots of new questions; and indeed it makes us want to watch even more.

Among the new “heroes” in the show, there is a minor antagonist who can turn everything into gold. Lucky guy, able to turn his own dandruff into gold flakes. And speaking of which, Zane, one of the heroes who died in Season 1, who has the power of “molecular manipulation”, similarly should be able to turn his shit into diamond, since both are made of carbon. Imagine if he had done that, he’d be a rich guy, instead of being insecure and subsequently killed off.

Other heroes include Nathan No. 2 a.k.a. Creepy Flying Classmate of Claire, American Sadako a.k.a. Girl who Unleash Virus when She’s Angry, and her antidote brother.

Somehow these powers don’t seem that impressive. Flying? Been there done that.

C’mon, there are so many other powers out there, like command the weather, shoot laser from the eye, rubbery body, create magnetism, able to transform into a super-powered motorcyclist, casting a hex to change probability, spider-pig sense, navigate through anything when standing on a surfboard, manipulate kinetic energy and be good at throwing poker cards, vampire hunter, vampire, assassin who can bullet-time, honorary knight who has the power of the force, one armed swordsman, young boy who will never age, plumber who can jump high and break brick ceilings, and they have to choose “unleash virus when you are angry“. Zzzzz. Oh well, it’s meant to be a drama to begin with.

Never mind, it’s still addictive enough to ruin my mid terms. 5 days to episode 2!

My brief stint as a deejay… Monday, Sep 24 2007

… in the usual ktv hangout in China Town.

kelvin selected “It’s My Life”.

“This is DJ stan on the house!!!! I say you say make some noise….

(chorus approaching)

C’mon, you know the words!!!!!”

Turned down the volume knob to silent.

Everyone yelling ITS MY LIFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Turned up the volume in a flash. Room was drowned with the sudden influx of deafening bass. Everyone was high.

Zouk-style… heehee..

Good times. :D

Heh heh. To think Linkin’ park can create a song based on popping acne. Way to go!!!

The evolution of Newton's 2nd Law of Motion. Friday, Sep 14 2007

In secondary school, we learnt that F=ma.

In jc, we learnt that F= (mv-mu)/t.

And now, behold the Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion, revamped, when applied to a fluid particle.

Unbelievable that these three are actually the same formula.

It’s 0211 am and I just wasted the past 3 hours trying to make some sense of it. And no, all of us are instead more confused than before.

Great job in exposè.
And….. I hate to say this but I think the ST reporters need to wake up their idea man.

Most of us already knew this way back in june!! If not, why then would we be so pissed?!

Catching Up… Thursday, Sep 13 2007

So 12 days have passed since I last posted anything. That is because I have been studying! :D After a few particularly stressful episodes, I decided it’s best to start studying and planning everything early, when I have the time, to avoid having to cram projects and reports at the last minute just so I can meet the dateline.

I had two CAs last week; both were not very well done. I got 10/100 for genetics, which translated to 1/10 in my grades. For biochem I learnt by visualization instead of word for word, which is a good thing if I had not visualized wrongly. =\

So I have not stopped studying since, except those few times which I went out, and tuition, and church.  And now I am actually kinda catching up in my studies. For the first time since don’t know when. I make sure I finish the tutorial on time – or at least read the tutorial solutions and understand – before attending the tutorials, I try my best to revise the lecture notes after every lecture, I read the practical manual before every laboratory session and I set datelines with my lab teammates to complete the lab reports.

Level 2 modules are not that easy. I should have known after taking cm2121 last sem. Then now I get a full comparison between a 6 MC level 2 biochem module and a level 1 genetics module.

In the lab session I had yesterday, we were supposed to conduct gel electrophoresis to separate 3 protein samples which we had collected weeks before. It was a 6-hour lab session in which we prepared gel, loaded up the buffer, prepared the sample, staining the product, comparison and analysis etc. It was not a simple task.

Coincidentally this Monday the lab session in genetics also happened to be gel electrophoresis to separate the DNA and RNA of E.Coli. bacteria. But it was anything but difficult. The first line in the instruction manual stated “The gel buffer has been prepared for you.” So we were exempted from all the tedious preparing, loading etc. In fact, apart from some simple mixing and centrifugating, the only thing we had to do in the gel buffer was to transfer the sample into one of the wells.

And amazingly, there are people who can’t get that right still! Maybe they are year 1 students, or maybe there is some miscommunication.  I have a lab partner who didn’t know how to pipette 250 microlitres. After our mentor repeated, twice, that we were supposed to pipette 100, 100, then 50 ul, she stared blankly, jotted down some stuff on her notes and asked to repeat again. Another lab partner, after expelling the sample into the well, he sucked up the sample again immediately because he released the sucking button while the whole pipette was still in the well. duh~!!!!! Ok I am evil but it just goes to show the great difference between level 1 and level 2 labs.

The most difficult theory subjects are still chem engine modules. After spending close to 10 hours studying thermodynamics, entropy, heat engines, and the like, and printing out MIT open courseware, and borrowing Cm1502 notes from my friends, I am still very blur. But if I continue at the pace right now, I think someday I will finally see the light. It shouldn’t take too long…

The Pretender Saturday, Sep 1 2007

This is fast becoming my favourite song!!

Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend
Keep you in the dark
And so it all began

Send in your skeletons
Sing as their bones go marching in… Again
The need you buried deep
The secrets that you keep are ever ready
Are you ready?
I’m finished making sense
Done pleading ignorance
That whole defense

Spinning infinity, Boy
The wheel is spinning me
It’s never-ending, never-ending
Same old story

What if I say I’m not like the others?
What if I say I’m not just another one of your plays?
You’re the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?

What if I say I’m not like the others?
What if I say I’m not just another one of your plays?
You’re the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?

I’m the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear
I’m the face that you have to face
Mirrored in your stare
I’m what’s left, I’m what’s right
I’m the enemy
I’m the hand that will take you down
Bring you to your knees

So who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?

Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend
