I speak as an immature Christian, having spent much of my so-called “Quiet time” knowing about God. Learning about His will, what we should do, what mindset we should adopt etc. etc. There’s nothing wrong with that I guess, in fact we should devote some time to study the Bible in that way, but that was all I did. I hardly spent time reading the Bible in a truly personal manner.
I think yesterday was probably the first ever time that a verse from the Bible impacted me to such depth. Even though my story is probably too embarrassing for me to reveal, let me share that verse anyways, it’s Romans 8:28:
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
I mean in the past I knew of this verse, I knew what it means. But that’s about it.
I don’t think I want to elaborate more but I realized only when you spend time meditating on the verse, and at the same time, tracing God’s hand in your life, then the verse can kind of come alive to you. I guess it is true indeed that God’s Word is powerful to change lives. It is true that a verse from the Bible can indeed speak to you directly. I’ve heard such statements uttered by people all the time, but I’ve never truly experienced it until yesterday, and even so it was but a brief glimpse of it.

My dad just asked me.
“hey you type very fast right? how many words per minute?”
Proudly i told him about 140+ wpm. I figured he would be quite impressed.. probably he took a typing test and realised he only had 20 wpm or something.
The next moment he placed his hand on my back and said “You’re about half as fast as this particular judges’ translator, who types at 288 wpm. Keep practising!”

My favourite quote from the article:
“It’s like Microsoft named Windows XP perfectly because they couldn’t live up to its enormous success with Vista, so XP is literally forms a smiley with closed eyes and is sticking its tongue out at Vista. Microsoft designed a product to mock their later failures.”
O the Deep Deep Love of Jesus Friday, Sep 11 2009

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, vast, unmeasured, boundless, free!
Rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me!
Underneath me, all around me, is the current of Thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward to Thy glorious rest above!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, spread His praise from shore to shore!
How He loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, nevermore!
How He watches o’er His loved ones, died to call them all His own;
How for them He intercedeth, watcheth o’er them from the throne!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of every love the best!
’Tis an ocean full of blessing, ’tis a haven giving rest!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, ’tis a heaven of heavens to me;
And it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to Thee!

I was quite lucky to be able to catch Anberlin on the third day of the baybeats event, held at the esplanade. They’re probably the most famous US people I’ve seen so far lol. And also that was probably the closest I’ve come to experience a concert, a mosh pit, seeing everyone (except me) singing along to every line of the songs. Damn if only I memorized some of the lyrics before I go so I can act like I’m a fanboy too when I was there haha.
There Will Be a Day Tuesday, Sep 1 2009

I try to hold on to this world with everything I have
But I feel the weight of what it brings, and the hurt that tries to grab
The many trials that seem to never end, His word declares this truth,
that we will enter in this rest with wonders anew
But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering
There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face
But until that day, we’ll hold on to you always
I know the journey seems so long
You feel you’re walking on your own
But there has never been a step
Where you’ve walked out all alone
Troubled soul don’t lose your heart
Cause joy and peace he brings
And the beauty that’s in store
Outweighs the hurt of life’s sting
But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering
There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more, we’ll see Jesus face to face
But until that day, we’ll hold on to you always
I can’t wait until that day where the very one I’ve lived for always will wipe away the sorrow that I’ve faced
To touch the scars that rescued me from a life of shame and misery this is why this is why I sing

These phrases suddenly stood out to me tonight, while having supper with my friends loo and zy. As I haven’t seen loo in years, it was a great time catching up and talking about old times. In the process of reminiscing, it was suggested that we would relive the “camaderie” moments again. Loo would get me drunk once in the future, we would go to lsb in thailand, or massages with special in jb.
Knowing I succumb really easy to peer pressure, fear started rising in me. I decided it is probably really not wise to go along, even if it’s just a holiday, even if we are good friends (which we are). To develop a good godly character one really has to spend a lot of time dwelling on God’s word and in prayer. I am languishing in both cases, but I hope this incident will spur me up to take knowing God more seriously. Truly we are in the midst of wolves (not saying my friends are wolves but ya I mean the temptations are really everywhere) and it takes real godly wisdom to know how to avoid them if possible, and resist them when they inevitably come. I really don’t have the wisdom now. But I pray that one day God will imbue that in me and chasten me gently if necessary.
Actually I realised, to be a good testimony for Christ, impression counts a lot too. Loo knows me as one who plays lots of computer games everyday(?), doesn’t resist a cigarette, gets drunk whenever I like, even though I can confidently say I really am none of the above anymore, thank God. I really shld play a lot less, be a lot more serious, and cut down on the rubbish talk, for my transformation to be more evident to others.
To any believer who just happens to be reading this, please don’t stop praying for me. I really, really fear the day where I lose my “first love” for Christ, and going back to being carnal and hedonistic again. (esp. so since my spiritual growth is really not as much as I hoped) I’ve seen it happened to so many people that it sometimes even shook my belief of eternal security. But I’m going back to trusting God that everything is under His control, that it is possible for believers to stray for awhile but they will always return to God, and that as long as I take my faith seriously, I shall never stray.

Chicken rice at chatterbox, cookie tasting victorian style, beef udon at The Deck, and probably more to come.
Ok the beef udon thing is a joke. But I gotta talk about the cookie tasting thing. There is this place, called Cookie Museum, at the Esplanade, that sells cookies of various flavours concocted by themselves. I must say, for most of the flavors, the different ingredients really blended quite well. There’s a recipe consisting of apple + some herb flavor, and then the cookie tastes like apple. There are no apple chunks inside; the whole cookie just tastes like apple. Then there’s one that contains lemon and maybe M&M chocolate or something, basically ingredients you wouldn’t believe would work when mixed together.
Now for the weird part. They actually sell: Heh bee hiam flavored cookies, nasi lemak flavored cookies, tom yam flavored cookies, and even Hainanese chicken rice flavored cookies (and even comes with its chilli sauce for you to dip in). I haven’t tried the chicken rice one, but the first three surprisingly taste really good. So yup, Cookie Museum, corner of first level of the Esplanade. Go check it out if you have the chance. A bit pricey but worth the experience.

Due to a really fortunate stroke of luck I actually watched this movie. Without knowing what it was about, and whether it was good or not. Boy I am glad I did.
I had a 6 hour break in between lectures (i.e. 12 pm to 6 pm) and my original plan was to buy the Optimization textbook and study during the 6 hours. But the book was out of stock in Central Forum and clementi book store. So I decided to go home and rest, but then it wouldn’t make sense cuz I needed to leave my house after a while considering the travel time takes 1 plus hour each time. So while on bus 165 I suddenly changed my mind, got off at Holland V, took bus 77 all the way to The Cathay to find a movie to kill time and watch alone.
I was deciding between Bruno, Mongol and District 9. Bruno didn’t have a satisfactory showtime. Mongol seemed nice, but I guessed it had to be longer than 2 hrs which would mean I would be late for my Proj Eng lecture. (and I was right.) So I ended up choosing District 9 instead. Produced by Peter Jackson, vaguely heard of it as a decent science fiction movie but that’s about all i know.
First 30 minutes or so of the movie I almost fell asleep (cuz it was afternoon, so that’s forgiveable haha) but when you start to identify with the main character you start to become hooked to the movie. All in all, I enjoyed it tremendously, and even msg a few friends saying hey it’s a good show.
What I didn’t know then, was it’s already NUMBER ONE in US, and it has gotten rather rave reviews (i.e. 88% in RT). So I really really made a good choice this time round.
So yea, without spoiling much, District 9 is awesome! Go watch it!
This semester I’m gonna overload, i.e. taking one module more than my other friends.
Read: Final year project, Optimization of Chemical Processes, Engineering Professionalism, Project Engineering, Reason and Persuasion. Initially I didn’t want to take Project Engine, but I realised it’s an extremely useful module and keeps your avenues open (i mean chem engineers mainly work in either design or operations, and Proj Engine is about design engineering) and that it is NOT offered next sem. And I have already bought the textbook for Reason and Persuasion, a philosophy module, plus the lecturer seems quite funny so i think I’d actually enjoy that module too. So I’ve decided to take one more module, to the horror of some of my friends but then again some of them have expressed horror at the “commitments” i have anyway all these years lol so I am quite nullified by their reactions.
Which means I have a total of 3 team projects and 1 FYP. PLEASE TELL ME I”M NOT SUICIDAL OK. Ya hopefully things will turn out well this sem. Play less, study more!
